Mediterranean diet gets amazing results in latest study
For years now, the Mediterranean diet has enjoyed its lofty place as the hardest diet to spell. Now, it's receiving an even more prestigious crown – the best diet for your health.
You know by now that I'm a big believer in the Mediterranean diet and it's ability to ward off a bunch of diseases common in America. But a new study out of Italy is showing that this diet may be even better for your health than many docs initially thought.
The study found a lowered risk for cancer, heart disease, and Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases in subjects who followed a strict Mediterranean diet. The Mediterranean diet is rich in vegetables, fish, olive oil, grains, fruits and nuts, and low in meat and dairy foods. You can even drink a moderate amount of red wine.
Researchers collected information from 12 international studies, including more than 1.5 million people. Among the group that stuck closely to the Mediterranean diet, there was a 9 percent decrease in deaths from cardiovascular disease, a 6 percent drop in deaths from cancer and a 13 percent reduction in deaths involving Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.
It just goes to show what I've been saying all along – you can improve your health by eating foods close to nature and by avoiding processed foods that are loaded with chemicals.
The numbers are in, and they're convincing. Think about them the next time you plan a meal or make a trip to the supermarket.
