Sweet, goopy remedy for sinusitis
Scientists may have finally uncovered why Winnie the Pooh always had his nose in a honey jar – he may have been suffering from chronic sinusitis. New research is showing that honey is effective in combating the bacteria that causes sinusitis. You see, the germ fighters in honey smother the bacteria that cause chronic sinusitis, and researchers found that honey can actually outperform antibiotics.
Especially in New Zealand and Australia, honey (particularly manuka honey) is used as a bacteria-killing agent in dressings for wounds. It also may aid with tissue regeneration for burns and with stomach ulcers.
The next step is going to be human trials and figuring out the practical problem of applying honey in cases of sinusitis. Obviously, applying honey to wounds or ingesting it for a sore throat or ulcers is more practical. In the meantime, if you're suffering from sinusitis, you certainly have nothing to lose by adding a little honey to your diet.
I recommend local raw honey, which may have some allergy reducing effects that may be useful in some cases of sinusitis. Otherwise, manuka honey is available by mail order from a number of sources.
